Oil exploitation is compatible with respect for the environment. The Muanda territory is a Natural Park with rich ecosystems of vital interest for biodiversity, as well as economic activity.
The coastal region is 40km long and 10km wide. The area includes the cities of Muanda and Banana (with its harbour) and 30 villages, with a total population of 150 000.
The region's climate is labelled Tropical Sudanese. It rains less than in other parts of the DRC, with a rainy season of five to six months a year. The area sees 900 to 1 000 mm/year from approximately 160 days of rainfall. Drought is recurring and can be disruptive. Influenced by the cold Benguela stream, average temperatures vary from 22°C during the dry season to 28°C during the rainy season.
The soils are sandy or clay and there are extensive areas of marshland along the coastal region. The land is not good for farming, partly because of the poor soil content. On dry soils isolated forest areas are found amid grassy savannahs; on wet soils, bush savannahs with mangrove typically predominate.
